Torre Rinalda competition (Reuse Italy)

Torre Rinalda is part of an old defensive system made up of several towers. Over time, this system lost its purpose of defense, but some of the towers remained. Through our proposal, we want not only to preserve these towers, but also to enhance them. We aim to do this through a series of contemporary interventions placed complementary to the current state of the towers, as to be more present in cases were the historical tissue is very damaged.
Our proposal entails a series of platforms that we consider more suitable for accommodating activities, concerts, exhibitions and parties with a large numbers of people. We took a step back from the traditional approach of vertically developed towers, where most of the spaces are reserved for circulations and gathering places are considerably reduced.
We wanted to conserve the current state of the degradation of Torre Rinalda, its history, so we chose to intervene as little as possible on the tower itself, our entire project being developed horizontally towards the sea front. Because the old tower has such thick walls, very appropriate for defense purposes, the inner space is unsuitable for large gatherings and events.
We wanted for Torre Rinalda to be given a new purpose, a function that can see it reborn once more, and the series of platforms with diffent areas and lounge spaces are designed with that idea in mind.
Another reason why we chose to design these horizontal platforms is the proximity to the sea and the beach, elements that we felt had to be integrated in the proposal because of their invaluable value both socially and as ambience.
